BILLBOARD DESIGN TIPS

CLEAR. CREATIVE. CONCISE.

Successful out-of-home ads hinge on bold designs that are easily read and understood. Reaching your target audience in less than 10 seconds can be a challenge but we have some tips that can help. These ideas can help build an eye-catching campaign but if you find yourself still needing a boost our design team will be glad to help.

TEXT

Drivers cannot focus on your ad for more than a few seconds. Copy should be limited to 10 words or less to be truly effective. Bold, sans-serif fonts typically work best for out-of-home design. Using easy to read fonts will increase read times and make your message easier to understand. If fancy or script fonts must be used, please keep them to a minimum.

COLOR

Much like choosing the right typeface, color combination is key on billboards. High contrast between colors is a must to insure that your ad will be readable from longer distances.

Avoid colors that don't have much contrast. Sometimes complementary colors can create an undesirable vibration appearance.

TAKE YOUR DESIGN FOR A
QUICK TEST DRIVE

Before going to print with your design it’s important to test for effectiveness. Start by printing the design on an 8.5” x 11’ piece of paper. Stand 8-10 feet from someone that has not seen the design and have them examine it for only 5 seconds and then take it down.

WHAT DO THEY REMEMBER
ABOUT THE DESIGN?

THE COMPANY?

The may be effective but it is not perfect. It could use some tweaking but if they remember your name it’s a good start!

NOTHING?

It’s probably time to go back to the drawing board. If no relevant info is retained then the copy and the layout should be adjusted to help get your message to the people.

EVERYTHING?

Awesome! It looks like you nailed it! Your ad should be effective enough to go into production.
